How to Clean CDs With Scratches on Them

A CD with scratches often skips during playback. In severe cases, a CD can be unable to play at all. Fortunately, there are many remedies available for cleaning CDs and removing scratches on them. However, a scratched CD will not always be able to be cleaned and brought back to its original, like-new condition.

      Pour rubbing alcohol over a soft cloth and clean the scratched CD surface with the cloth. The rubbing alcohol removes any unwanted substances from the CD surface and improve its ability to be read by a CD player. Allow the CD to air dry before testing it.

      Apply furniture polish to a soft cloth and rub the polish over the scratches on the surface of your CD. Spread the furniture polish over the CD so that it fills in each scratch. The furniture polish improves the shine of the surface of the CD. Clean the CD surface using rubbing alcohol and a clean cloth after applying the furniture polish. Allow the CD to air dry before testing it.

      Put toothpaste on a soft cloth and rub the toothpaste into the scratches on the surface of your CD. Apply pressure when rubbing the toothpaste into the CD so that it is able to wear away the scratches. Clean the CD surface using rubbing alcohol and a clean cloth after you have worn away the scratches. Allow the CD to air dry before testing it.
