New York Blues Clubs

Originating in the Deep South in the late nineteenth century, the style of music known as the blues has morphed from a simple rhymed narrative into the foundation for multiple musical genres such, as jazz, R&B and rock music. Today, the blues have expanded beyond its original inception and is a driving force in the world of music, being featured live around the world. New York City, a major entertainment force in the world, has several excellent blues clubs bringing in the best in the genre, while pushing forth new talent.
  1. The Blue Note

    • The Blue Note is located in Greenwich Village, having become something of an institution since 1981. It displays both jazz and blues artists, with an emphasis more on jazz while highlighting some of the best blues artists in the world. The club doubles as a restaurant, featuring several fine dining choices. There are nightly shows beginning at 8:30 p.m. during the week. The Blue Note also has weekly showcases, such as the Sunday Brunch Series, which occurs every Sunday at 12:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. and the Late Night Groove Series on Friday and Saturday evenings at 11 p.m.. There are membership opportunities available for those who wish to receive discounts and coupons. The gift shop, which is on site, sells local memorabilia and live recordings of shows that have been performed at the Blue Note.

    BB King's Blues Club

    • Located in Times Square near Penn Station, BB King's Blues Club is a restaurant and bar that features numerous live blues acts. The club is separated into two spaces with the Showcase Room being the main stage for musicians. The Showcase Room contains a full bar and several tables in a horseshoe shape around the stage. Food is offered during a show. Lucille's Restaurant is the other space in the Blues Club. Designed as a southern diner, Lucille's features live music every night. On weekends, BB King's features two brunch specials. The Saturday brunch features a Beatles cover band, while the Sunday brunch displays the World-Famous Harlem Gospel Choir

    Village Vanguard

    • The Village Vanguard has been open since 1935. Primarily a jazz club, the Vanguard does feature blues based performances on a regular basis. Doors open nightly at 8 p.m. for shows at 9 p.m. and 11 p.m.. There is also a 12:30 a.m. show on Saturday evenings. The Vanguard is all ages, though it is recommended that smaller children remain home due to a strict quiet policy in the club. There is a $10 minimum drink charge that is included in the ticket price. Food is not served in the club.

    Terra Blues

    • The Terra Blues on Bleecker Street brings in some of the best blues musicians in the nation. Open Tuesday through Sunday, the Terra Blues' doors open nightly at 7 p.m. Acoustic sets begin the show, creating an intimate environment for blues lovers. After 10 p.m., the musicians plug in, bringing an electric set to close the evening. Thursday evenings bring about national acts, while the rest of the evenings feature local musicians.
