How to Remove a DVD From a Case

So you've just laid down your hard-earned money for a copy of that DVD you've been dying to see--an action film that's been getting tremendous buzz, a comedy all your friends claim is a laugh-riot, or a childhood favorite that's finally made its way to this shiny digital format. Smiling, you look for an opening in the shrinkwrap, a defensive weakness with which you can free your new treasure from its packaging--but there's none to be found! Here's a simple, and fast, way to get the disc out of its plastic prison.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Make a very light incision on the top of the DVD case with a razor blade or utility knife, breaking the shrinkwrap. Keep the incision close to the natural split in the top of the DVD case, where the two halves of the plastic shell meet. If you do not have a razor blade or utility knife handy, run your thumb along the top of the DVD case, feeling for the seam. Once found, wiggle the seam with your thumbnail until you can pry a corner loose, breaking the shrinkwrap.

    • 2

Carefully peel all traces of shrinkwrap from every side of the DVD cover and discard the shrinkwrap.

    • 3

Examine the case, looking for security tape over the top, bottom, or side of the case, beneath the shrinkwrap layer. Remove it with your thumbnail, as in Step 1. Take extra caution when removing the remnants of security tape from the package, however--if removed too quickly, this tape can cause small tears on the DVD case itself, resulting in cosmetic damage.

    • 4

Open the DVD case as you would open a book, exposing the disc itself.

    • 5

Place your index finger onto the round locking hub in the center of the case, upon which the disc is mounted. Press firmly down on this hub, while using the thumb of the same hand to wiggle the DVD itself off the hub. The disc should pop onto your index finger.
