Connect your RCA cables to your computer. The red and white cables are for your audio. The yellow cable is for your video. You can use an S-video cable in place of your yellow RCA cable for video if you have one and if you have S-video cable plugs on your computer and VHS player.
Open your movie maker program. Click "OK" to accept all the preset commands. A new workspace will appear with a project box and a timeline. Your project box will contain all your imported files. Your timeline is where you will edit your video.
Record your VHS video into your project. Click your "File" tab and select "Capture." This will start a recording. Press the "Play" button on your VHS tape player or camcorder. Your video will record into your project box.
Stop your video recording when you are finished with your video. Press "Stop" on your VHS tape player or camcorder. Pressing the "Stop" button on your VHS tape player or camcorder automatically stops the recording process within your project. Drag your newly recorded video to your timeline.
Edit your video using your "Razor Tool." Click your "Razor Tool" on your video file to create a start point. Create an end point for your video. Delete any unwanted video by dragging the video portion to the "Garbage Can" icon at the bottom of your timeline.
Repeat these steps for each new video you import. Place each new video on its own layer. A layer is an image or file on top of another. Drag the video to the timeline to place it on a new layer. To create a new layer, place the video below the current video layer. This will automatically create a new layer.
Add effects to your video. Click your "Window" tab and select "Effects." A new window will appear in your project box. This is where all your effects will be stored. Select your effect.
Click the folder "Video Transitions" to expand all the effects. Choose "Fades" to fade one video into another. Choose "Animations" to select pinwheels, blinds or other animations. Choose "Roll" to roll one video into another. There are other types of transitions to choose from. Drag the effect of your choice in between your video files. If you do not want to edit or add effects to your video, skip these steps.
Add music or sound effects to your video. Click on your "File" tab and select "Import." Choose "Audio." A pop-up will appear. Choose your audio file.
Drag your audio file to your timeline and edit it using your "Razor Tool."
Add audio effects and transitions to your audio file found in your "Effects" window.
Render your edited movie. Rendering makes your edited movie seamless. Click your "File" tab and select "Render."
Export your movie to DVD. Click your "File" tab and select "Export." Choose "To DVD." A pop-up will appear. Save your file as an MPEG-2 file. Name your DVD. Place your blank DVD into your writeable tray. Click "OK."
Save your file.
