Plug in your VHS/DVD combination player. Some devices also require you to plug in the device to a television to access the burning menu, and others operate without a television.
Insert the VHS you wish to copy into the tape slot on the device.
Insert a blank DVD disc into the DVD drive of the device. Ensure that the disc has enough space to fit the VHS tape.
Press the play button on the VHS player, and the record button on the DVD controls. Your device may require additional input. Check the operator's manual for more specific instructions.
Wait for the transfer to finish. Do not interrupt the process, or you may damage the disc, rendering it unusable.
Insert the VHS tape into your camcorder and set the device to playback mode.
Plug the camera into your computer. Your camera may have a firewire cord, or analog AV cords depending on your model. Not all computer video cards will work with each type of connection.
Open a video capture utility. Windows Movie Maker, included with most copies of Windows, and iMovie, pre-installed on Mac OSX both have video capture and export features.
Use the utility to capture footage from the VHS and save the footage on your hard drive.
Export the footage using the same program you used to capture. Choose a format compatible with most DVD burning software, such as AVI or MPEG. Some video editing programs, including Movie Maker and iMovie, can export directly to DVD.
If necessary, open DVD burning software and burn the footage to a disc.
