How to Retrieve Video From a Broken DVD

When a DVD is damaged or broken, you are typyically unable to copy any of the files stored on the disc. Although it is not possible to salvage a disc that is completely broken in half, or with extreme scratches, it is possible to repair minor damage and eventually retrieve the data from the disc. This may take a few methods of correcting and repairing the disc, but none of the possible repairs are overly expensive.

Instructions

    • 1

Wipe the bottom of the DVD with a damp cloth. This removes excess dirt, fingerprints and other debris stuck on the bottom of the disc.

    • 2

Place the DVD into a DVD cleaner. This is a small, circular device that buffers out slight imperfections on the disc (such as scratches and cuts). Turn on the device and allow it to run through a cycle. Once complete, the slight scratch is gone from the broken DVD.

    • 3

Insert the DVD into the disc drive of the computer. If the computer automatically states the disc is damaged and it is unable to read it, there isn't anything you are able to do about the disc.

    • 4

Click "Start," "(My) Computer" and double-click the DVD icon. Momentarily a window appears, displaying all of the files stored on the DVD.

    • 5

Click-and-drag the video files you want to retrieve from the open window onto the computer (it does not matter where you copy the files to). A progress bar appears, displaying how long you have to wait to finish copying the files.
