How to Extract Audio From a Video DVD

Concert DVDs and other movies may have soundtracks you love, but you can't always take them with you. Luckily, there are ways to rip the audio from DVDs into formats that are compatible with most portable audio players. Depending on your technical know-how, computer speed, and overall patience, one of these methods will work the best for you.

Instructions

  1. Using DVD Audio Extractor

    • 1

Download and install DVD Audio Extractor. Insert the DVD you want to rip into your disk drive and launch the program.

    • 2

Select the DVD drive next to "DVD Source" if the program hasn't done that automatically.

    • 3

Select the audio tracks you want to rip by checking the boxes next to the chapters. If you are unsure if you want to rip a chapter, check a box and then click the "Play" button to preview it. After you have selected all the tracks you want to rip, click "Next."

    • 4

Choose what format you want the audio to be saved as by clicking on the drop-down menu next to "Output Format." Click "Next."

    • 5

Choose where you want the files to be saved to by clicking on the folder icon on the right side. After selecting the folder, click "Next" again, and then click "Start" to rip the files.

    Using Audacity

    • 6

Download and install Audacity. Insert the DVD in your disk drive and launch the program after installation is complete.

    • 7

Select "Edit," and then click "Preferences." Under the "Audio I/O" tab, go to the "Recording" section; select "What U Hear," and then click "OK."

    • 8

Click the "Record" button in Audacity to begin playback of the DVD. Let the portion you want to record play in its entirety. When finished, stop the DVD's playback and hit the "Stop" button in Audacity.

    • 9

Go to "File," then "Export as WAV" to save the audio from the recording you just made as a WAV file.

    Using Handbrake and Format Factory

    • 10

Download and install two separate programs: Handbrake and Format Factory (see Resources). Launch Handbrake after installation is complete.

    • 11

Insert the disc you want to rip in your disk drive. Click on "Source" and wait for Handbrake to analyze the disc.

    • 12

Select the title you want to convert by clicking on the drop-down menu next to "Title." If you do not know which title you want, it is usually the longest one. The shorter titles are usually the menus and bonus features

    • 13

Go to "Tools," and then "Options." Select the "General" tab. Click on "Browse" and select the folder you want to save the files to. Click "Close."

    • 14

Go to the drop-down menu next to "Container" and select "MP4 File." Click "Start." Handbrake will rip the DVD as an MP4 video with an "M4V" extension.

    • 15

Close Handbrake and launch Format Factory. Click on the "Audio" tab and select an audio format.

    • 16

Drag the M4V you just created into the program window, and then click "OK."

    • 17

Click "Start" to convert the video rip of the DVD into an audio file.
