How to Print Pictures From a Movie

Creating a print picture from a movie can be achieved using a screenshot or screen capture setting on your computer. The print can be used only in a personal capacity unless you have permission from the movie's creators and producers to reproduce the image.

Things You'll Need

  • DVD copy of movie
  • Computer with screenshot capability (almost every computer has this feature)

Instructions

    • 1

Play the movie on your computer, either using a DVD copy of the movie or by streaming the movie from the Internet.

    • 2

Reduce the screen size of the movie just slightly smaller than full screen. The size depends on how large you would like to print the image, but make sure your mouse is accessible.

    • 3

Pause the photo on the frame you would like to convert to a print.

    • 4

Use the print screen or screenshot function on your computer's keyboard. For a Mac computer, simple press "Command" + "Shift" + "4," and you will see crosshairs appear on your screen. Hold the mouse down, drag the crosshairs over your paused movie frame and a picture file will appear on your desktop. If using a PC, simply press the "Print Screen" button on your keyboard. Then open a word processing program, press paste, and your computer monitor will appear. Save the file as a JPG or PNG.

    • 5

Open the image file created in the previous step in a basic photo editing program. If using a PC, you may need to use the crop tool in the program to cut out the edges around the DVD screen that were also captured during the screenshot.

    • 6

Check the image resolution and set it between 150 and 300 DPI, or dots per inch. The screen resolution, or amount of data present in the image, will likely be recorded at 72 DPI, as that's the standard digital screen resolution. A minimum of 150 DPI is necessary for printing.

    • 7

Save the image and send it to your computer's printer. Check the image and be sure it prints at the desired size. There will be limitations on the size, since the original image is a screenshot and will be recorded at the screen size with a digital resolution. For example, if you take the screenshot on a small laptop, the image will have only the dimensions present on the screen. If you record the screenshot on a large display monitor, it will record a larger image dimension.
