Netflix Options

Netflix is an Internet subscription service that provides DVD rentals and streaming movies and television episodes over the Internet to PCs, Macs and TVs. The company's more than 20 million subscribers in the U.S. and Canada, as of 2011, pick a subscription plan suitable for their needs -- with no due dates, late fees, shipping fees or pay-per-view fees to worry about. Netflix ships approximately 2 million discs daily to members across the United States alone.
  1. DVD Options

    • Netflix offers DVD rentals where members can rent movies for an unlimited amount of time. When a member returns one movie, then Netflix sends another movie out to take its place, based on what's in the member's "queue," or list of desired movies. Plans include unlimited viewing options as well as the ability to rent Blu-ray movies. DVD plans start at $9.99 per month, as of 2011.

    Gaming Consoles

    • Netflix offers direct streaming to gaming consoles including Sony's PlayStation 3 (PS3), Nintendo's Wii and Microsoft's Xbox 360. The built-in Blue-ray player on the PS3 allows members to stream high-definition (HD) and Blu-ray movies and television programs. Streaming on the Wii and the Xbox 360 enables HD streaming.

    Streaming Devices

    • Devices such as Apple TV, Google TV, the Roku streaming player and the Seagate Free Agent Theater+ HD media player allow members to stream movies and televisions programs directly to their televisions. Additional devices include the Sony Dash personal Internet viewer, the Sony Network Media Player and the WD TV network media player. Streaming devices may require monthly service agreements in addition to a Netflix membership. Select devices allow members to rent movies the same day as the DVD releases.

    Blu-ray Players

    • Blu-ray players allow members to stream movies and television programs directly to televisions. Wi-Fi capabilities and HDMI cables enhance the picture quality of the picture. Output is full 1080p and 24 hertz. Manufacturers of Netflix-certified Blu-ray players include Insignia, LG, Panasonic, Philips, Samsung, Sony, Pioneer and Vizio.

    HDTVs and DVRs

    • Streaming directly onto Netflix-enabled televisions and digital video recorders (DVRs) allow members to watch movies and televisions in full HD and 3-D, when applicable. You must have an Internet connection directly to a television to enable Netflix streaming.

    Portable Devices

    • The Apple iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch and Windows Phone 7 enable members to view movies and televisions directly on their portable devices. Devices require members to be in a Wi-Fi area or an area with adequate cellular signal.
