Netflix Streaming Tips

When NetFlix arrived on the scene, it gave video stores a run for their money. For the first time ever, renters didn't have to worry about late fees, as Netflix allowed users to keep DVDs for as long as they wanted. Then Netflix took the next step by allowing subscribers to view movies instantly from their computers or televisions without the need for discs.
  1. Use Your Console

    • Netflix instant viewing movies can be streamed for your computer, but they can also be viewed on your TV through a video gaming console. The PlayStation 3, the Xbox 360 and the Nintendo Wii are all equipped to stream Netflix movies. If you have one of these consoles, be sure to get the Netflix disc or channel for free, and begin watching movies on your TV.

    Netflix Mobile

    • Get the Netflix app for your iPhone, Android or BlackBerry smartphone. With the official Netflix app, you can manage your DVD queue, as well as your instant viewing queue. What may be even bette,r however, is the fact that you can watch any of the movies in your instant queue from your mobile device. While a Wi-Fi connection offers you better streaming quality, you can still view movies through 3G and 4G wireless connections.

    Stream Only

    • You no longer need to have any DVDs going back and forth through the mail in order to stream Netflix instant viewing movies. The company now offers a streaming-only video service at a cheaper rate. Now for only $7.99 per month (as of 2011), you can instantly watch all the TV shows and movies that Netflix has to offer. Keep in mind, however, that many of the new releases are available on DVD only.

    Computer Shortcuts

    • While streaming Netflix movies from your computer, there are several shortcuts you can use on your keyboard, instead of having to click buttons with your mouse. The space bar and "Enter" keys, for instance, can both be used to play and pause the movie. By pressing "F," you can put the movie into full-screen view, and by pressing "Esc," you can exit full-screen view. Pressing the "Shift" and "Left Arrow" keys together rewinds, while pressing the "Shift" and "Right Arrow" keys fast forwards. While in full-screen mode, you can also view the frame rates by pressing "Ctrl," "Shift," "Alt" and "C" together. To view your streaming bit rate, press "Ctrl," "Shift," "Alt" and "S" together.

    Netflix Remote Tricks

    • If you opted to buy a Netflix box for instant viewing on your TV, there are a few things you can do with the remote that came with it. Press the "Up" arrow twice to reveal a quick summary of the movie or TV show, as well as a rating and a thumbnail picture of it. Press the "Down" arrow twice to show a progress bar at the bottom of the page. This progress bar is divided into little sections of 2- to 6-minute intervals (depending on whether you're watching TV or movies). By hitting the right or left arrow, you can toggle through the intervals, much like DVD chapters.
