Federal Film Grants

Federal film grants are available from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), a federal agency. The NEA offers two grants for film projects. These grants can cover the cost of production, editing and other expenses that film makers may incur during the filming process. NEA grants are awarded to projects that the NEA believes will help the community. They are not loans, and they do not need to be paid back.
  1. The Arts on Radio and Television

    • The Arts on Radio and Television is a grant for nationally-televised film projects that focus on artistic issues. Broadcast film media projects can get this grant. Only nationally-broadcast films are eligible, according to the NEA. Grant amounts are from $10,000 to $20,000.

    Access to Artistic Excellence

    • Access to Artistic Excellence is a grant program that offers funding to documentary, experimental, narrative or animated work, according to the NEA. The film must promote innovative and creative media use. Ideally, the film project will be targeted to underserved communities, such as minorities, women and those with disabilities, according to the NEA. Grant amounts are from $5,000 to $150,000, according to the NEA.

    How to Apply

    • In order to apply for either of the above grants, download the application and application materials from the NEA website (nea.gov). Send a grant proposal along with the application package through Grants.gov.
