Film Project Grants

Advocacy groups and premier film institutions offer project grants to filmmakers, film workers and film schools. Most of these grant-giving bodies announce their calls for submission through websites, film groups, magazines, newspapers, TV and radio. They usually provide the requirements, qualifications and contact details on their websites. Some accept applications every year while others are one-time film funding projects.

    • The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, a prime mover in the Hollywood film industry, distributes the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Institutional Grants to a variety of motion picture-related colleges, universities and nonprofit organizations to promote quality film education and more project opportunities for aspiring filmmakers. These film grants are open for submissions every year. The program prioritizes minorities and qualified student filmmakers and film workers encountering financial difficulties in their film education or film projects.

    Hollywood Foreign Press Association Fellowship Grant

    • The Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) Fellowship Grant is open to major film schools in the United States to support their scholarship projects. This yearly program allows awarded colleges and universities to administer their individual grant selection of film scholars needing financial aid to continue their education. Qualified students include those in the fields of directing, cinematography, screenwriting, producing, editing, acting and production design. Recipients can use the fellowship funds for their tuition fees and other direct educational expenses and costs associated with the production of their student film projects.

    Women in Film Foundation Scholarship

    • The Women in Film Los Angeles' Women in Film Foundation Scholarship program offers financial assistance to women filmmakers enrolled in graduate programs of any major film schools in the Los Angeles area and other parts of the U.S. Accredited schools nominate students for the program based on academic merit, artistic achievement and financial need. Film grants under the umbrella of the program include: Meredith Mac Rae Memorial Scholarship; WIF Crystals Scholarships; Verna Fields Memorial Fellowship; Women In Film/Loreen Arbus Endowment; Women In Film/Tichi Wilkerson Kassel Endowment; Eleanor Perry Writing Award; and Bruce Paltrow Endowment. Offered scholarship grants vary in each participating film school.
