Disability Film Grants

According to a 2009 Journal of Research in Special Educational Needs article, 54 million Americans live with a disability. Artists with disabilities often face obstacles securing employment in the film industry, although data from the Journal of Research in Special Educational Needs indicates a 9.1 percent increase in the representation of people with disabilities in the past decade. Film festivals such as the Superfest (International Disability Film Festival) showcase stories about disability and promote increased awareness in the general community. In addition, a variety of grants and scholarships exist to help people with disabilities gain greater access in the film industry.
  1. Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation Grants

    • The Reeve Foundation provides Quality of Life Grants to nonprofit organizations, which help people with paralysis have more opportunities and independence in local communities. The foundation, created by the late actor Christopher Reeve (e.g., Superman, Law and Order) and his wife Dana, awards grants in three categories referred to as the ABCs of Quality of Life: Actively Achieving, Bridging Barriers and Caring and Coping.

Organizations can receive up to $25,000 in funding. Previous grants have been awarded to organizations that help people with disabilities have greater independence and access in media arts (film), theatre, dance, adaptive sports and schools. Grant cycles run from January 2 to July 1. The foundation does not offer individual grants but provides information on financial assistance available through the Paralysis Resource Center of the Reeve Foundation. The site provides complete information on the grant process, and applications can be completed online.
