Clean the area that you have chosen for the dance floor. Remove all leaves, dirt and other debris from the area, if the area is located outside. If the dance floor will be inside, use a vacuum to clean the area. Choose a smooth surface and use a bar level to ensure the surface is even.
Use a shovel to dig a ditch in the ground into which your dance floor will fit. Dig an even ditch so that all parts of the dance floor are aligned properly. Use the bar level to determine evenness.
Measure and decide how many boards of plywood will be required to complete your dance floor. You can make a standard 16-foot by 16-foot dance floor with eight sheets of 4-foot by 8-foot and 2-inch by 4-inch plywood boards. Choose the type of wood you feel will work best for your needs. Select between ACX and CDX plywood. Each has their advantages, but ACX is better quality and you will be able to avoid the expense of using a sealer, which must be used on CDX plywood.
Construct the square frame of the dance floor by using plywood 2-inch by 4-inch boards that are 16 feet long. Cut the 2-inch by 4-inch plywood boards so that the length of each edge of the frame is 16 feet. Place the boards with the 2-inch side facing the ground, so that the height of the frame will be 4 inches. Create three 2-inch by 4-inch, 15-foot-8-inch-long boards, and place them inside the frame, 4 feet apart. Cut another piece of 2-inch by 4-inch board into four separate 4-foot pieces to fit into the frame, perpendicular to the long center pieces. Join the boards together by using a screwdriver to insert two screws into each overlapping point.
Position the plywood above the frame with the flat surface facing up. Utilize 1-inch screws to secure the sheets into position and place these screws 5 inches from each other. Twist the screws in securely.
Install and add dance floor edging around the outer boundary of the floor, if desired. Follow the instructions given with your respective edging.
