How to Build a Lighted Dance Floor

If you are planning a party and want your guests to get their groove on, a lighted dance floor makes your event especially memorable. A lighted dance floor provides guests an area to dance and the solid flooring prevents twisted ankles that could ruin an evening. Lighted dance floors seem like a big undertaking but can be completed with a little time and only a few accessible supplies.

Things You'll Need

  • Four sheets of 8x4 plywood for an 8x16 dance floor (adjust sizing for space available)
  • Wood textured vinyl floor covering
  • Flooring adhesive
  • Four safety latches
  • Rope light kit that can be powered by extension cord (this is for the circumference of your dance floor and is optional)
  • Several strings of decorative paper lanterns
  • Lightweight rope
  • Extension cords

Instructions

    • 1

Lay out plywood on a flat work space and make any cuts necessary to fit your desired dimension.

    • 2

Apply vinyl flooring to the entire top surface of each piece of plywood using adhesive and the manufacturers instructions. Allow sufficient drying time before proceeding.

    • 3

Arrange the plywood pieces in the desired configuration. Attached safety latches around the circumference of the plywood pieces at the edges where they meet. This ensures the pieces stay together while the dance floor is in use. The latches can be unhooked for dance floor dis-assembly and storage.

    • 4

Attach the rope light brackets to the circumference of the dance floor along the outside edges of the plywood. Be sure to position the brackets so that guests won't trip over them.

    • 5

Insert rope light into brackets and attach extension cord. Tape down extension cord to prevent being tripped over.

    • 6

Hang lanterns over head in a manner that minimizes extension cord use. The lightweight rope can be extended overhead for added support. Secure tightly to prevent falling.

    • 7

Extend cords to power source being sure to tape down loose cords.
