Face your dance partner, placing one hand on your partner's waist (men usually place the right hand on the waist to lead) and take your partner's hand with your other. During the dance, you'll roam around the room going counter-clockwise. Beginners should stay toward the center of the room where the movement is usually slower. Faster-moving couples should dance toward the outside.
The man takes a forward step with his left foot. The woman, moving backward, takes a step back with her right. Following this, the man takes a forward step with his right while the woman takes a step back with her left. These two steps should be taken quickly, to the beat of quick-quick for counts 1 and 2.
Take the next two steps slowly. Dancers pause through count three, then take a slow step for beat four, again the man stepping with his left and the woman with her right. Take another pause for beat five, then on beat six, take the second slow step.
Repeat the pattern of quick-quick-slow-slow and you're doing the basic two-step in your cowboy boots.
