Peabody Dance Steps

The Peabody dance style is a faster form of the fox-trot, which is a slow and slinky dance. Done to ragtime music, the Peabody is jumpy with a unique partner hold. It was named after the policeman William Frank Peabody who, because of his awkward girth, had to hold his partner to the side instead of directly in front of him. In general, the Peabody is a brisk dance that covers a large amount of space. Partners can add slight dipping motions with their upper bodies once they master the rhythm and flow.
  1. The Cross-Step

    • To perform the cross-step, place the lady on the right side of the leading man, facing the same direction. The lady's right hand and the man's left hand should be clasped together in front of them. The man's free hand should be around his partner's waist while she has her forearm draped gracefully across the man's shoulders. In this position, the man steps forward on his right foot while the lady does the same thing with her left foot in count "one." The next two steps are a quick right-left for the lady while her partner does the opposite. The pair repeats this step on the other foot; the man now steps on his left foot while his partner steps on her right. Once you get comfortable, you can add promenades and simple turns.

    The Lock Step

    • The lock step is another easy Peabody dance step. Using the same hold as explained in the cross-step, both partners dance the following steps. Place your leading foot (right) in front of you on count one of the music and step behind your right foot with your left. On count two, move your right foot back to the starting position. Perform the same motion for counts three and four but reverse your feet so that your left is the first to step forward. In the same way, repeat the motion returning to the original foot pattern for counts five and six. Return your left foot to the forward position on count seven and make a quarter turn to your right to complete the pattern.
