Basic Dance Steps

Before performing any type of dance, always make sure you begin by stretching your muscles and warming up your body. If your goal is to become proficient in a certain type of dance, or dance in general, starting off with the basics is essential. Be patient with yourself and wait until you have mastered the basic steps before moving on to steps that are more difficult or complex. Overall, enjoy what you are doing. Your pleasure and enjoyment will be visible to those watching your dancing no matter your skill level.
  1. Step-Touch

    • To gain comfort with shifting your weight from foot to foot, begin by practicing the step-touch. This will form the basis for many more complicated dance steps. With your weight on your left foot, reach your right foot out to the front or side and touch the ball of your foot to the ground. Do not switch your weight to the right foot. After a brief pause with the ball of the right foot extended and touching the ground, place the foot back alongside your left foot. Shift your weight to the right foot and repeat this, touching the ball of your left foot to the floor.

Add another dimension to this step sequence by traveling with it. Instead of placing the foot doing the touching motion alongside the other foot, place it a little ways in front of it. By repeating this sequence, you are stepping to travel across the floor.

    Step-Brush

    • Similar to the step touch, step brush strengthens the weight shifting element, but adds a different twist. Instead of touching the ball of your foot to the floor, brush it in a forward motion on and up off the floor, forming a small kick. Keep your weight on the opposite foot, and do not shift it until the brushing foot returns to its place beside your other foot. Repeat this left and right.

To build upon this once the step is mastered, turn this step into a fan kick. Instead of brushing forward, slightly raising the foot from the ground, start by brushing the foot diagonally and higher off the ground. If you are brushing your right foot, position it so your leg crosses your body diagonally. When your right foot reaches the peak height, it should be in front of, or slightly to the left of your left foot. With your left it should be in front of or slightly to the right of your right foot. To add the fan element, form an arc with your right foot, heading right, in front of your body, to place it back alongside your left foot. Reverse and repeat. The height of your arc should increase as your flexibility allows. Ensure that both knees and ankles are kept straight and toes and feet are pointed down.

    Step-Ball-Change

    • The step ball change challenges you to switch your weight back and forth between both feet in one swift sequence. Step forward with your right foot, putting full weight on it. Place your left foot behind your right (about one step's distance behind) and rock your weight back so your full weight is now on the left. Your right foot will be raised slightly off the floor. Switch your weight back to your right foot and lift your left foot and place it to the side (about one step's distance away from the right). Put your weight on the left. Repeat this sequence by placing the right behind the left. Put the weight on the right. Step and rock your weight back to the left. With weight on the left foot, place the right to the side of the left. Repeat.
