Types of Dance Floors

From tap and disco to ballet and jazz, there are many different types of dance and floors are a critical aspect in all performing arts' techniques. The surfaces and makeup of floors vary to help aide in the effectiveness of a particular dance style and highlight a dancer's moves.
  1. Disco Floor

    • If you've ever seen the movie "Saturday Night Fever," you'll remember John Travolta gliding across a lighted dance floor. These floors sprung up during the 1970s in disco clubs around the world. These floors are made of cubes of plexiglass which sit on top of a metal frame.

    A Ballet Floor

    • Ballet is a graceful style of dance where the dancers primarily use their feet to express their art. Flooring that is used for ballet should be flexible with a surface that grips. The flexibility of the floor allows the dancers to move more freely on their feet and provides shock absorbency to avoid harsh strain that they may be subject to on a regular floor. Additionally, the gripped surface provides traction for the dancer.

    Tap Floor

    • The floors used for this style of dance need to be made of wood in order for the tap to be heard. The type of wood that is used is important, as it needs to be sturdy. Maple and oak are two strong woods that are suitable for this purpose. The floor also needs to be flexible to provide the dancer with shock absorbency, protecting from damaging joints and ligaments.

    Cork Dance Floor

    • Cork is a flexible material, so a dance floor made of cork provides shock absorbency and easy movement for the dancer. Cork flooring is also very resilient, so it will last a long time. If you are considering having a party, you may want to rent a cork dance floor, as it is easy to move and can be used outdoors.

    Interactive Dance Floor

    • These floors are new to the dance world and use LED lights and computer technology to add to the entertainment of any social event. The lights can be in different colors, which aide in changing the mood of your event. You're name can appear on the dance floor, as well as digital photographs.
