How to Make Dance Floors Non-Slippery

For a dancer, the way you can move across the floor is very important. If the flooring is too slippery, or contrarily too sticky, the performance can be affected in a big way. Most performers strive to find a balance with their flooring -- a slick surface that still has enough to friction to help them move throughout their performance.

Consult the guide or materials that came with your flooring during installation. These guidelines should provide you with a recommended product for cleaning your floor. Some products can end up making your floor even slicker, so be sure to test out a product on a small area of the floor before using it on the entire area. If you have a vinyl dance floor, be sure to avoid cleaners that have ammonia or abrasives in them. These can permanently damage your floor.

Clean the floor on a regular basis. It's best to dry mop the floors daily to get rid of debris and dust, and avoid using any cleaning products that could harm your floor. To ensure that temperature and humidity are not the culprits of your slippery floor, check the HVAC system. If humidity is an issue, consider using a dehumidifier in the space overnight.

Use rosin as a quick fix to gain more traction. Rosin is supplied in a box so that dancers can dip their feet into it and create more friction between their shoes and the floor. If you've had professionally installed dance floors, be sure to check the manual for the go-ahead to use rosin on the floor. In some instances, rosin can be detrimental to flooring.
