Types of Worship Dance

Worship, or praise dances, are typically meant as worship and praise a higher being. They are prayers through movement and a way to express your devotion without using spoken words. Many cultures, from Native American to Asian and many religions, such as Christianity, employ worship dances as a means of worshiping the higher power of their culture and religion.
  1. Creative Praise Dance

    • The Creative Praise Dance is a Zionism worship dance that incorporates different motions as well as rhythmic movement to convey the meaning of a song or hymn. The dancer uses her body to convey the beauty in the movement and beat of the music. The movements of the dance are meant to convey the true meaning of the words and overall meaning of the song.

    Sun Dance

    • The Native American Plains Sun Dance is a pinnacle of the tribe's religious ceremonies. The dance conveys rebirth and renewal. It is typically performed for four to eight days for the summer solstice. The dance is intended to ensure harmony to all living things and, likewise, to convey praise and worship to the gods. This dance was the communal religious ceremony for the bison-hunting Plains' tribes.

    Liturgical Dance

    • Liturgical dances are used primarily in the Christian religion to help act out or accentuate words. Liturgical comes from the word "liturgy," which means a rite or body of rites prescribed for public worship. Liturgical dances are an accompaniment to a minister's sermon, but it should not take away from the sermon itself. The dance should enhance the words of the priest or minister.
