The Standard division of DanceSport is more commonly recognized as ballroom dancing. It is also the most popular and most widely recognized form of DanceSport, thanks to the many international comeptitions that feature it. Competitors in the standard division of DanceSport usually compete in seperate categories for each dance, such as the Waltz, Slow Foxtrot and Quickstep. Costumes for this division are elaborate but more conservative than for its Latin dance counterpart, with floor-length gowns that cover the neck very common.
The Latin dance division differs wildly from other DanceSport divisions. Latin DanceSport is a highly rhythmic form of DanceSport, with dancers relying heavily on the beat of the particular music being played to execute their dances. The Samba, the Rumba and the Cha Cha are common dances seen in Latin division DanceSport events. Costumes for Latin DanceSport are more revealing and sensual than in other categories and often feature more intricate beading and adornment.
The Rock 'n' Roll division of DanceSport competitions is relatively new compared to the Standard and Latin divisions. It includes a variety of acrobatics within the dance routines. Often referred to as Swing Dance or West Coast Swing, Rock 'n' Roll features many of the dance moves seen in the 1950s and '60s. Dancers often wear costumes that complement the dance style, such as pants and patterned shirts for the men and skirts with a great deal of movement for the women.
The Ten Dance division of DanceSport is often seen at international competitions at which competitors are seasoned and fierce. This is because it takes an immense amount of skill, practice and memory to compete in the Ten Dance category. Dancers must learn 10 individual dances and perform them all within one competition. The Ten Dances include the Waltz, Tango, Viennese Waltz, Foxtrot and Quickstep, as well as the Samba, Cha Cha, Rumba, Paso Doble and Jive.
