Famous Manhattan Nightclubs

In any city, nightclubs are a way to escape from the boredom of everyday life, but in New York, they're in a whole different category. Since Manhattan isn't lacking in entertainment and fun activities, the Big Apple's destinations have to amp it up a bit, creating some of the most legendary nightclubs in the world. Here are a few of the island's most famous nightlife options.
  1. 40/40 Club

    • Jay-Z is among the most successful artists in hip hop history, which is quite a surprise coming from a former broke Brooklyn kid. Today the rapper is celebrating his success in big style with the 40/40 Club, a swanky Manhattan sports bar that's sure to please even non-sports fans.

The 12,000-square-foot club is furnished with modern décor and several VIP rooms, including Jay's Room, decorated with a plush Italian leather couch, custom pool table and a 72-inch plasma television. The ESPN is the club's largest VIP room, where big-hitters go to play with the lounge's four flat-screens and arcade games with 100 of their closest friends.

Not to worry if you can't make it into one of the 40/40 Club's VIP rooms. The main room's enormous slate bar is happy to accommodate you, especially if you're a fan of cognac, Jay-Z's drink of choice.

    Circa Tabac

    • New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg can't touch this smoker's paradise. As one of the very last bars in New York where it's still legal to smoke indoors, Circa Tabac embraces its taboo persona, selling different types of cigars and cigarettes from around the world. The club has managed to make smoking chic again, with hundreds of patrons packing the bar's well-ventilated space almost every night.

Circa Tabac consistently gets pristine reviews from travelers and locals alike on sites like Yelp and CitySearch, gaining the bar an average of four out of five stars on each site. Customers are quick to praise the resident DJs, tasty small plates and "chill" vibe.

    Marquee

    • When you think of a New York nightclub, something like Marquee might come to mind. Celebrities come to rub elbows with models and New York's elite at this luxe, dimly lit dance lounge. Marquee is exclusive and it prides itself on that fact. The New York Post named it the "hottest nightclub in the universe."

Just getting in the door to the venue is a difficult task. If you're a straight man with no women in tow, your luck is better at another club, reviewers say. Handsome men with beautiful women on their arm are most likely to get past the doorman, where techno beats boom and drinks are plentiful until 4 a.m.
