Grants for Memoir Writers

Writing a memoir is a great way to record your life experience for future generations. Whether you have lived through combat, extreme weather, natural disasters, or any other important historical events, there will almost certainly be other people who want to read your memoir. However, there are some costs associated with writing a memoir, and so you may want to apply for some grant money to offset the costs of self-publishing or taking time off from work to concentrate on writing.
  1. State grants

    • Contact your state council for the arts or a similar body for information on available grant money for writers, which may be as little as a few hundred dollars or up to several thousand dollars.

    • Members of the National Association of Memoir Writers have access to members-only grants, as well as other perks.

    National Endowment for the Humanities

    • The National Endowment for the Humanities sponsors a number of grant programs your memoir would be a good fit for, particularly if the memoir revolves around an event of historical significance.

    NEA

    • The NEA (National Endowment for the Arts) is another organization that provides grants to writers.

    Barbara Deming Memorial Fund

    • The Barbara Deming Memorial Fund may be a viable grant option for you if you are a woman and your memoir has a feminist point-of-view.
