What Are the Requirements for Publishing a Book?

Publishing a book is an exciting process, but the publishing industry typically takes a long time when it comes to taking a book from the initial submission to display at your local bookstore. If you are interested in publishing your own novel through a traditional publishing house, there are a few requirements and recommendations you should follow before attempting to contact an editor, as very few publishing houses actually accept unsolicited manuscripts from unpublished authors.
  1. Manuscript and Proposal

    • Before attempting to publish a work of fiction, you must have a completed, revised and correctly formatted manuscript. The manuscript should be typed on your word processor, double spaced, and include a title page with your name and contact information. Each chapter should start on a new page. If you are trying to publish a non-fiction work, you must prepare a proposal. The proposal should also be typed in your word processor, but includes a detailed, chapter by chapter outline of your book, along with a complete list of references and one to three sample chapters.

    Literary Representation

    • Because most traditional publishing houses will not accept unsolicited submissions from writers, it is ideal to get representation from a literary agent. Search for a literary agent that represents your genre on websites like Publisher's Marketplace or Agent Query. Prepare a personalized query letter for each agent you contact and include the name, word count and genre of your book, a blurb describing the book, and a short bio of your writing career. Read the guidelines on each literary agency's website, as their exact requirements differ from agency to agency.

    Platform

    • A strong platform is necessary for a non-fiction work. For example, if you have written a book of advice for playing the stock market, you will need to be active and successful in that area. You will need achievements like public speaking or published articles that establish you as an authority. For novelists, an online presence is highly recommended, as many literary agents and editors search for authors online before deciding whether to work with them. A professional website and/or blog can go a long way in advancing your publishing career.
