How to Make a Flamenco Pinata

Flamenco is a dance from southern Spain. It has a diverse history, but most often is associated with Gypsies. It is a combination of guitar, dancing and handclaps. At children's parties, children take turns trying to break the piñata with a stick or bat. The piñata is filled with candy and toys, and when the piñata breaks open, all the children rush for the treats. Making a flamenco piñata is possible using papier-mache and a toy doll.

Instructions

    • 1

Create a work area that is usable for at least 24 hours. Cover a table with a vinyl tablecloth, plastic or old newspaper.

    • 2

Blow up a round balloon to the size you want the piñata to be. This area holds the candy and toys.

    • 3

Tear the newspaper into strips about half to inch wide.

    • 4

Create the papier-mache mix with one part water to one part glue.

    • 5

Dip the newspaper in the glue mixture and then apply to the balloon. Smooth out the strips so there are no creases. Repeat until there are three to five layers. Let dry overnight.

    • 6

Pop the balloon with a pin and remove the balloon and then paint the papier-mache red.

    • 7

Pour the candy and toys into the papier-mache.

    • 8

Place the doll in the papier-mache so her waist is even with the edge of the opening. Cut the opening if necessary. Secure with duct tape.

    • 9

Refer to an image of a flamenco dancer and cover the piñata with the red tissue paper. Go around in a circle creating rows. Glue the top edge of the tissue paper to the papier-mache and leave the bottom edge uncovered to represent ruffles. Be sure to cover the duct tape around the doll's waist. Let dry.
