How to Make Carving Wax
You can mold, sand and polish carving wax to create realistic forms like those in wax museums. Carving wax is more forgiving than other traditional sculpting media, since you can fix mistakes and smooth gaps by simply adding more wax over the problem area. Artists use a combination of waxes when preparing carving wax, as certain types are too brittle to work with on their own.

- Candy thermometer
- Paraffin wax
- Microcrystalline wax
- Talc

Melt equal parts paraffin and microcrystalline wax in a double boiler at 160 degrees F. Use a candy thermometer to monitor the melt temperature.

Mix in two parts talc when the wax is completely melted.

Remove the wax from the heat and pour it into wax molds. The wax is ready to carve once it is cool and dry.
