How do I Do Avery T-Shirt Transfers?

Creating your own iron-on transfers allows you to make uniforms, shirts for your family, or a uniquely personalized article of clothing. In the past, iron-on transfers were no different than the T-shirts purchased from the department store; however, with Avery iron-on transfer paper, you can create any design or saying on your computer and make a T-shirt that is truly one of a kind.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

  1. Create and Print the Design

    • 1

Design the image or text for your shirt in the appropriate software program.

    • 2

Click on "Print" in the program you are using. When the print window opens up, select "Properties" or "Preferences."

    • 3

Select "Print Mirror Image," or, if this option is not available in your printer settings, you can flip the image or save text as an image and then flip it in any simple image-editing software.

    • 4

Print the design onto a piece of plain paper to make sure the image and/or words are printing in mirror image.

    • 5

Print the design onto the transfer paper and trim the blank edges around the text or image.

    Transfering the Design

    • 6

Empty the iron of any water, and make sure the "Steam" setting on the iron is turned off.

    • 7

Heat the iron up to the highest cotton setting.

    • 8

Set up the ironing board and place a towel on top of it.

    • 9

Lay the shirt on top of the towel and place the transfer paper on the shirt with the printed side down. Make sure the image/words are in the position you desire and the top of the image/words are toward the top of the shirt.

    • 10

Press the iron down on the transfer paper firmly with your hands and pass the iron in a horizontal direction that overlaps the previous pass with each successive pass. Then switch directions and move vertically, following the same overlapping pattern across the transfer.

    • 11

Remove the T-shirt from the ironing surface and allow to cool for two minutes.

    • 12

Peel the backing off the transfer and you are left with your newly designed T-shirt.
