The Roswell Artist-in-Residence program was founded in 1967 to accommodate exceptional studio-based artists while they worked in a resourceful, college arena for a year. Artists are provided with time, or the ability to work without interruption with the hopes of innovating concepts and discovering bold ways to achieve their goals. Painters, print-makers, sculptors, photographers, and new media artists are offered grants.

The United States National Park service offers artist-in-residence grants to visual artists who concentrate on depicting natural park landscapes through writing, music, composition, sculpting and performance. Artists use the landscape for inspiration as they document the multifaceted environments for Americans who many never travel to the Rocky Mountains. Artwork donations are given in return for the two-week residencies; the works of art are become a part of the park museum's art collection. A portion of all proceeds are given to the artist.

The MacDowell colony is the United States' primary art colony for writers, playwrights, filmmakers, interdisciplinary composers and architects. The residency was founded in Edward MacDowell---an American music composer---in 1907. Aspiring applicants send a portfolio of work samples that are critiqued by a panel of professionals. Residencies may last for up to two months, during which artists have access to studios, places of residence and additional facilities.
