Upcoming artist grants provide funding for research, training, travel and artistic exploration to artists with fewer than five years of professional experience. Research and exploration grants are designed to finance the creation of a piece or to advance a technique. The research grants cannot exceed $15,000. Advanced training grants provide funding for artists to study with a mentor in their field who lives outside of Quebec. The training grants cannot exceed $9,000. Travel grants provide funding for artists to attend professional seminars or exhibitions of their work. Travel grants inside Canada cannot exceed $1,000. Travel grants to the United States, Mexico or Europe cannot exceed $2,000. Travel grants to other countries cannot exceed $2,500. If an artist lives more than 400 kilometers (248 miles) from an international airport, she will be awarded an additional $750 for travel to the airport.
Development grants provide funding for artists to create new works or new techniques in their field. Applicants must have at least two years' professional experience. The applicant cannot conduct research in conjunction with an established academic program at an educational institution. The development grant cannot exceed $25,000. The grant provides money for living expenses up to $1,700 each month. The grant also provides money for research expenses, equipment and facility rental, and minimal travel. Special studio and studio apartment grants allow artists to use a conseil-run studio or apartment. The conseil has studios and apartments in 15 countries. Each studio or apartment has its own application requirements.
Career grants are awarded to artists with at least 20 years of professional experience. Screenwriters and filmmakers receive $50,000, while all other artists receive $60,000. The Jean-Paul Riopelle Grant designates $60,000 for visual artists only. All career grants are awarded biannually. Applicants must submit an application, a curriculum vitae, a document explaining how the grant will further the artist's work, a list of professional achievements, a press kit and visual or audio examples of the artist's work.
