Select the type of pine you want to use. Small variances occur when tying various pines, the most popular being balsam pine.
Select your ring size. Wreaths vary from 10 inches up to 70 inches. A 20-inch wreath ring is a popular size.
Cut the pine boughs into approximately 6- to 8-inch pieces. Cut them from the main branch. Some of the pieces are pretty ugly, but don't worry; it will be beautiful by the time you are done. The ugly pieces will be used as filler behind the pretty pieces.
Fasten the wire to a 20-inch ring. Wrap the wire on the outside ring seven times, overlapping the wire. Leave a tail approximately 1 to 2 inches. Bring the wire around to the inside ring five times, overlapping both rings each time. Pull the wire tight. Do not cut the wire.
Gather your balsam pieces. Make a small pine bouquet that lays flat on your hand. Place the ugly pieces in the back.
Place the bouquet at the starter wire. Wrap it around the bouquet three times and pull tight.
Prepare your next pine bouquet. Overlap about half the bouquet that is already on the wreath. Wrap wire around it three times to tie it in place.
Continue this process until you come full circle.
Tie the last bouquet. Wrap the wire around seven times.
Flip the wreath over and cut the wire with about 3 inches of slack.
Wrap the slack part of the wire around the inner ring about five times. Bring the wire to the starter wire and securely twist them together. Form a loop and twist the last part of the wire to the outside ring. You can use the last part of the wire as a hook.
