How to Make a Piano Wind Chime

Wind chimes have been used throughout history for a variety of reasons. Spiritual leaders used them for healing purposes and to keep away evil spirits. Farmers used them to scare away animals from their fields. Today, wind chimes are mainly used for decoration and come in all shapes, sizes and types of material. If you want your own wind chime, but would like to have something different than what's commonly found in stores, craft your own wind chime out of pieces of a piano.

  • Four white piano keys
  • One black piano key
  • Cord
  • Wooden cross
  • Hook with hole

      Purchase or make a small wooden cross. Each section shouldn't stick out more than 2 inches from the center.

      Drill holes into the middle of each section of the wooden cross. Take the four white keys and drill holes near the top of each key. Drill a hole into the center of the black key.

      Tie a piece of cord to each white piano key and tie the other end to the wooden cross, using the holes you drilled. Hang the keys 1 to 2 inches from the cross.

      Tie a piece of cord to the black piano key and connect it to the wooden cross by tying the cord around the center. Make two loops on the top side of the cross, using the cord. The black piano key should hang horizontally in the middle of the white keys.

      Tie a piece of cord to your hook and tie the other end to the two loops made from the black key cord. The recommended hanging length from hook to cross is 1 to 3 inches.

      Hang the wind chime where it catches the wind to hear the clicking of piano keys from your handmade wind chime.
