Film Container Art Projects

Old film containers often sit around collecting dust or get thrown away after use. They can, however, be given a new life with a bit of creativity. Everyone from children to adults can turn film containers into useful everyday items and decorative objects. Here are a few film container art projects that can be completed and enjoyed by a variety of age groups.
  1. Match Stick Holder

    • Turn a film container into a waterproof match stick holder. Glue a small patch of sandpaper to the outside of the lid. Then decorate some construction paper and glue it to the rounded exterior for a bit of personalization. You can also choose to add decals or stickers in place of construction paper. Place your matches inside for a unique and water resistant holder.

    Lipstick Tube

    • Film containers can be used to store old lipstick that may have fallen out of its tube, or maybe even lipstick that you have made yourself. First clean the tube thoroughly with soap and water, and dry it with a cloth. Paint the tube's exterior with an acrylic craft paint in either gold or silver. Allow it to dry thoroughly. Mix leftover lipstick with petroleum jelly to give a glossy effect, as well as creating a larger amount of lipstick. Place the mixture into the film container to give both the lipstick and the container a new life.

    Mini People

    • Turn your film containers into miniature people that can be used by children for play, or simply for decoration. Turn the container upside down so that the open end isn't visible. Glue a pom pom to the top for a head. Add small plastic eyes, available at any craft store, and draw on the remaining facial features with a marker. Glue some yarn or string to the top of the head for hair, and top the hair off with the canister lid for a hat. Glue a piece of pipe cleaner across the back of the container to act as arms. Then take some pieces of scrap fabric and cut them into the shape of clothing to fit the canister. Glue buttons to the fabric, and draw on any other decorations with a marker. Then glue the fabric to the front of the container.

    Musical Shakers

    • Old film containers can be turned into musical instruments set for hours of enjoyment. Paint the containers the colors of your choice, using acrylic craft paints. Allow them to dry completely. Open the containers and fill them with rice or beads. Fill each container with a different material if you would like, to achieve a different sound from each one. Close them tightly and shake them for a musical sound.
