Public Art Projects

Public art projects are an exciting way to encourage the community to come together to make improvements and bring beauty to their neighborhoods. Projects don't have to be expensive. The following public art projects require more muscle than money. Young and old can work together to create window murals, painted concrete area rugs, plywood sculptures or embellished park benches to breathe life and unity into the places they love.
  1. Window Murals

    • Painted window murals can be temporary or permanent.

Painted window murals can be temporary or permanent art installations on public or private buildings. Holidays and special events are perfect subject matter for temporary murals on large windows like banks or storefronts. Spread Christmas cheer or inform the community of an upcoming charity event. More permanent murals can be created with enamel based paints in timeless colors and themes. A little bit of paint, a few paintbrushes and some willing hands can create art with impact and a purpose.

    Painted Concrete Rugs

    • Concrete rugs can be elaborate or simple designs.

Oriental, contemporary or anything in between -- painted concrete rugs are a spectacular way to bring color and excitement to public walkways or concrete courtyards. Temporary rugs can be created as public art projects during festivals. Colored chalk and concrete can mimic pastels on a textured canvas. When the festival is over, bring out the water hose and the scrub brushes and the images will only linger in photos snapped by the participants. Permanent painted rugs can be done in themes to match the surroundings, like animals in a zoo. Epoxy sealers can protect each work of art for years to come.

    Plywood Sculptures

    • Plywood sculptures can be large, yet inexpensive.

Plywood sculptures are much less expensive than their metal counterparts. Challenge local art students to create the designs and recruit the community to perform the installation. Laminate multiple sheets of plywood together to create stronger structures. Paint the pieces with waterproof materials to protect the wood and keep the colors from fading. Artists, carpenters and gardeners can come together to create an oasis of beauty in a local park or community entrance.

    Embellished Park Benches

    • Mosaic park benches are beautiful works of art.

An embellished park bench art project can revamp old, worn-out benches or create newly installed works of art for public seating. Participants can create new mosaic tile seats or backrest covers for existing benches with donated ceramic and tile cast-offs from the community. New seating can be as easy as pouring low-lying concrete structures and topping them with mosaic works of art. The designs can be random or dedicated to a specific theme -- either way, they will be a welcome addition to any public space.
