How do I Build a Small Electric Ceramic Firing Oven?

Ceramic is an attractive, distinctive art form that can be created in the comfort of your own home with the right equipment. To create beautiful pieces of pottery, a firing and baking system is needed to heat the individual pieces. An electric ceramic firing oven is an effective system for baking pottery pieces and to create unique, lasting designs.

Things You'll Need

  • Large bucket
  • Water
  • 25 lb. bag of low fire terra cotta clay
  • Galvanized garbage can, full size
  • Electric drill
  • ¾ inch metal drill bit
  • Table saw
  • Cardboard
  • Miter saw
  • Drill
  • Kiln coils with control box
  • Welding machine

Instructions

      Prepare the terra cotta clay by mixing with water to a thick clay consistency in the bucket. Clear the trash can of any dust or debris.

      Apply a 3-inch thick layer of clay to the inside of the trash can including the lid. Make sure the clay is even and smooth throughout the can. Allow the clay to dry for 72 hours.

      Attach the kiln coils to the bottom outside of the trash can. Weld the ends of the coils in place.

      Drill two holes in the side of the trash can to attach the control box. Affix the control box to the kiln using the screws.

      Connect the ground wire to the screws. Switch the kiln coils on and check the temperature before firing any pieces.
