How to Use Stucco in Art

Stucco is a decorative material used for coating the walls and ceilings of a building. It is usually made of a mixture of cement, sand, lime and water. Once stucco is mixed, it is applied to a surface with a trowel or spatula to create an authentically rustic facade. However, walls and ceilings aren't the only places stucco can be used for its aesthetic appeal. Adding stucco to a canvas is a creative way to add extra dimension to your artwork.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase stucco in the color, consistency and density of your preference. Most craft and hardware stores sell a variety of kinds of stucco. Choose the type of stucco you would like to use in your artistic endeavor.

    • 2

Open the container for your stucco and stir it thoroughly with a stirrer. Stucco has a tendency to separate after sitting on a shelf for long periods of time, making it essential that it be properly mixed before use.

    • 3

Apply an amount of stucco to your palette.

    • 4

Use a putty knife to apply the stucco to your canvas.

    • 5

Allow the stucco to completely dry before applying other paints or a second coat. Most stucco dries in about an hour, but check on your brand's instructions for a more specific timeline.
