How to Use Resin in Art

Resin, a hard plastic substance, can be used to create collages and other interesting pieces of art with a few simple tools. Allow your creativity to shine by making projects that reflect your individuality and create visual appeal at the same time. Resin is often used for small jewelry pieces such as pendants and earrings, as well as larger paintings and sculptures. Using resin might take some practice, but once you get the hang of it you can add new skills to your art-making repertoire.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose an item to be filled with resin. It needs to be an item with a lip around the edge, such as a shell, bottle cap or jewelry setting. You can also use a plastic mold that you purchase for this purpose at an art supply store.

    • 2

Cut out any images you wish to use for your collage with scissors. Images can include pictures, newspaper or magazine clippings. Glue the images to the bottom of the item you have chosen to work with. Layer other items on top depending on the depth of the item you are filling with resin, such as glitter, beads or other images.

    • 3

Mix the resin you have chosen to work with according to the package instructions in a disposable cup with Popsicle sticks. Resin can be purchased from art supply or craft stores and include brands such as Envirotex and Castin' Craft. Pour the resin into a disposable squeeze bottle, dropper or plastic syringe.

    • 4

Squeeze the resin into your prepared collages to the top of the item or slightly above, if you prefer a domed appearance. Allow to dry for two to five minutes. Most of the bubbles should disappear on their own, but you can blow on the piece lightly to help get rid of any remaining at this point.

    • 5

Allow the pieces to dry for at least 24 hours before using for jewelry or other creative purposes.
