How to Use Wallpaper Samples in Art

Wallpaper is a common material used in mixed media art projects because of its many colors and textures. Artists who make multimedia art projects frequently keep wallpaper samples in their arsenal of art supplies. Wallpaper can be used for backgrounds in multimedia pieces, or it can be cut to specific shapes to be formed into figures in the foreground.

Draw a sketch of the art you're planning to make, to help you decide what your finished art project will look like. Spread the wallpaper samples in front of you and write your ideas on a piece of scratch paper. You may draw several studies until you're happy with the results. Use this study as you make your art.

Draw the shapes you wish to cut out of the wallpaper samples on the back of the wallpaper, using a pencil. Cut the wallpaper shapes out with scissors.

Dip the wallpaper in room-temperature water and adhere the wallpaper onto the canvas or surface of your art. Allow the wallpaper to dry for 24 hours.

Add whatever other details you wish to the art. You may use whatever materials you have available to you to draw or paint on or around the wallpaper.
