How to Draw a City Sky Line

A city skyline is the view of a city as seen from a distance so that the rooftops of the tall buildings are seen in silhouette against the sky. Skylines are a common graphic image used in postcards, advertising and fine art. You can easily draw your own sky line with a ruler, a pencil and a piece of paper. Because skylines are geometric, it doesn't take a great deal of creative talent or drawing skill to make a believable sky line.

Instructions

    • 1

Draw a horizontal line lightly across the page. This represents the horizon and will later be shaded over.

    • 2

Draw a series of horizontal lines at various heights above the horizon line. These represent roof tops of various buildings. Leave a space in between each rooftop.

    • 3

Draw a series of vertical lines down the side of each rooftop. These vertical lines represent the sides of each building.

    • 4

Connect the side of each building to the side of the building next to it, using horizontal lines. These horizontal lines represent more rooftops in the sky line. Draw these rooftops above the horizon you established in step 1.

    • 5

Shade the bottom half of the skyline. Shade over the horizon line as you do so.

    • 6

Draw a series of antennas on the top of some of the buildings, at random.
