Juried Art Shows in Virginia

One way to display your art and potentially make some money from it is to enter into an art show. For artists living in Virginia there are a number of paid and unpaid options. Another option is to submit art to be displayed in a local gallery, and there are options to do this in Virginia as well. Be sure to contact the chair of the competition or art show to find out exactly what the requirements are for entry.

  1. Academy of Fine Arts

    • The Academy of Fine Arts in Lynchburg holds a national photography exhibition. As of 2010, more than $3,000 in prizes and $1,000 is given to the photograph awarded Best in Show. Up to three submissions are allowed, and all work must be original and not previously submitted to this competition.

    Arts Work

    • Arts Work, in Richmond, holds a yearly all media show. Any three pieces of artwork in any style and medium can be submitted to the show. The show is juried by art professionals, experts and professors. First prize is awarded $200, second $100, third $50. There is an entry fee for both non gallery members and for members.

    Virginia Highlands Festival

    • The annual highlands festival holds a juried art show. Paintings, photography and diptychs are accepted. Up to two entries are allowed (per contest rules diptychs count as two entries). There is an entry fee for each piece of art. Three awards of excellence are given out at $750 each, five awards of distinction at $250 each and five awards of merit at $100, as of 2010. The art is displayed in galleries and museums all over Abingdon.

    Seawall Art Show

    • The Seawall Art Show is an annual juried art show held in Portsmouth. All media is accepted, and entrants must mark which kinds of art they are entering on the entry form. As of 2010, more than $9,000 in awards is offered, including $2,200 for best in show. Artists must submit digital images representative of their submissions to the judges. There is an entry fee.

    Four Seasons of Oatland--Art Show

    • Oatlands, a National Trust for Historic Preservation site, holds an annual fall art show on the Oatlands property. Both photography and paintings are accepted, up to four entries per person. A best in show is awarded to both mediums, although there is no cash prize (displayed art work is available for purchase). There are special awards for artists under 18. Entrants mus submit a digital image of their work.
