How to Make Young Children's Costumes for a Drama Play

A dramatic play might seem like an opportunity for kids to indulge in make-believe fantasies. However, plays allow kids to engage their imaginations, creating worlds where they get to be others, create fictional realms, and conquer monsters and obstacles. Making children's costumes for a play might seem daunting since they must fit well and are comfortable; some plays even require multiple costume changes. Luckily, you can create such costumes without any sewing experience.

Instructions

  1. Pillowcase Costumes

    • 1

Lay a pillowcase out in front of you with the closed end at the top. Cut away the corners making cuts that are even and approximately 5 to 6 inches long. Use pinking shears to make the cuts decorative and minimize the fabric from unraveling.

    • 2

Use your pinking shears to create a 10-inch neck opening, simply by creating a slit that long, also from the closed end of the pillowcase.

    • 3

Decorate the pillowcase any way you like, as you can now throw it over a child and use it as tunic, dress or shirt. Cover it with animal fur, spots, stripes or glue feathers onto it. Cinch it with a belt to create a more fitted, fashionable look. Add rhinestones, beads, or buttons. Add fabric pockets or collars. Any decorative element you add will shape the costume, but still keep the base easy to wear.
