Choose a t-shirt. Good colors are black, purple, red or green. Look for unconventional combinations. Black makes almost all other colors pop. Also consider your character. Black and purple say depressed, red indicates anger and army green, rebellion. Don't select a shirt with an emblem or logo. You don't want to unknowingly wear something offensive.
Pick out your jeans from a thrift store for that air of vintage authenticity. They can be black, faded blue, army green or camouflage, depending on your character. You can add a couple of rips to the knees with a razor or pair of scissors.
Girls may want to go with a skirt. You can wear a short flared skirt, a long narrow one or a mini. Vinyl or leather evoke a rebellious, modern image, but don't go too short or too tight. If you do wear a short skirt, pair it with tights or dark stockings.
Boys and girls can wear metal-studded motorcycle boots or lace-up army boots. Girls can wear anything from army boots to go-go boots or spike heels. Try a black base color with studs or laces in red or purple.
Style your head to get that authentic rock 'n' roll spirit. You can either get creative with the spiking gel and hair color or you can use a hat or bandana. Top hats, knit caps and motorcycle caps in black work to get an edgy allure. Add a funky hat band to a top hat or derby. Put on some pale makeup with dark eyeliner and black lipstick. Androgyny is the ticket: "Guyliner" will work for boys.
Try on a jacket. Try black leather or ripped denim, depending on your character. Or emulate the Rolling Stones' legendary axe-man, Keith Richards, with a modern pirate look, complete with long frock coat, hat and various ragged scarves, fake dreadlock hair extensions and bandanas. Girls can wear ruffled skirts and blouses.
Purchase fake tattoos and piercings at a costume store. Keep tattoos generic; skulls, for example. Put them on arms, neck or ankles. Avoid the torso. Accessorize with safety pins, heavy chains and earrings for both boys and girls.
Look for guitars, basses and drums in bright colors unless you are playing your own equipment. You may want to pick up something cheap at a thrift store that you can smash like guitar legend Jimi Hendrix.
