How to Make Paste for Children

Some parents or teachers make homemade paste using inexpensive materials and very little time. Making your own glue or paste can be less expensive than purchasing the products from a retail outlet, but that isn't the only benefit. With adult supervision, children can participate in making the homemade paste, giving them an opportunity to get involved in the process of creating artistic materials ideal for papier-mache and collage projects.

Instructions

    • 1

Pour 1 cup of water into a saucepan and set the heat to high. Bring the water to a hard boil and gradually stir in 1/4 cup of flour. Continue to stir as you pour in the flour to help prevent the mixture from clumping.

    • 2

Reduce heat and allow the mixture to simmer for two minutes. Check for consistency. Add more flour if necessary. The total amount of flour for 1 cup of water should not exceed 1/2 cup or you will have paste so thick it won't spread.

    • 3

Stir the mixture and simmer for another three minutes. A total of five minutes is the maximum simmer time. Remove the paste mixture from the heat and spoon it into a plastic container to allow it to cool. The cooling process will take between 10 and 15 minutes.
