At the beginning of play Julius Ceaser, the political climate in Rome is tense and unstable. Ceaser has returned to Rome after defeating Pompey and his allies in the civil war. He is now the most powerful man in Rome and is being hailed as a hero by the Roman people.

However, there is a group of senators who are concerned about Ceaser's growing power and are determined to stop him from becoming a dictator. They are led by Cassius and Brutus, two of Ceaser's closest friends.

Cassius and Brutus plot to assassinate Ceaser and convince several other senators to join them in conspiracy. They eventually succeed in killing Ceaser on the Ides of March (March 15) but their victory is short-lived.
