She felt that the film was a departure from the lighthearted, wholesome roles she was known for and that it portrayed her as a "tough broad". She also had a strained relationship with the film's director, Charles Walters, and believed the studio (MGM) had deliberately cast her against type.
Even though the film was a box office success and earned her a Golden Globe nomination, Day considered it a career misstep and regretted ever making it.
