Acting Camps in Houston, Texas

As of July 2010, Houston was the largest city in Texas, with more than four million in its metropolitan area. With a prominent performing arts community. it is little surprise that the city offers a number of unique opportunities to learn how to act in theater settings at a variety of camps hosted throughout the year by various institutions and schools.

  1. Drama Kids International

    • Drama Kids International has four chapters in the greater Houston area--Southwest, Northwest, Katy/Memorial and Humble. In addition to a year-round program, Drama Kids International hosts three summer sessions as well as a winter holidays mini-camp. The three sessions include: a performance camp for ages 6 1/2 to 11; "Tales from Far Away" for ages 6 1/2 to 11 and the Drama Kids Play House for ages 11 to 15.

    Main Street Theater

    • The Main Street Theater offers camps during both the summer and winter. There are two locations of the Main Street Theater around Houston--Rice Village and Chelsea Market.

      The summer Performing Arts Camp allows children to work directly under professional actors, dancers and teachers. At the end of the summer, campers do a final showcase performance on one of the four Main Street Theater stages.

      The winter sessions are a "mini-camp" where kids are introduced to aspect of acting, story telling and various behind-the-scenes functions.

    Musical Theatre Summer Camp

    • For young actors with a flair for musicals, there's the Musical Theatre Summer Camp put on at St. Matthew's Lutheran Church. The camp ran six four-week sessions during the summer of 2010, with each class comprised of 15 to 20 campers. Each camper will take classes in acting, singing and dancing under a pair of instructors. At the end of each four-week session, the campers put on a performance. Campers audition for roles in the performance during their four weeks.

    Camp Broadway

    • Camp Broadway is sponsored by the Theatre Under the Stars and runs one week during each summer. The camp includes singing, dancing and acting classes, along with tickets to a musical, a backstage tour and lunch with performers. A performance for family and friends is held at the conclusion of the week-long camp.
