How to get tickets to a Broadway show for under $40

There are a few ways to get discounted tickets for Broadway shows. Most of the ways to get tickets under $40 require that you go to the box office early on the day of the show. Broadway theaters like to create enthusiasm for their shows, so they host inexpensive ticket lotteries. For these lotteries, you go to the box office several hours early, fill out a form and get the time you go back to see if your ticket is chosen from a random selection process. At that time, many people will be gathered in front of the theater to see if their entry form was chosen. After a certain number of entry forms are chosen, the rest of the crowd is sometimes offered other discounts for the play.

Instructions

    • 1

Access the "Playbill Broadway Rush, Lottery and Standing Room Only Policies" website. It contains a list of current plays that are offering discount tickets. Most of the plays are major Broadway performances for which you can get good seats for less than $40.

Choose a play you want to see. Follow the directions on the website for the play you have selected. For example, if you chose the "Addam's Family," you have to be a student to get a discounted ticket, which is around $40. Not all theaters have this policy. Some offer tickets to the public at similar discounts for good seats and some host lotteries.

Type in the name of the play in the search box to get more information about it. For example, if you type in "Addams Family" into the search box, a list of links will come up. The first link will usually give you more information about the discount tickets, and the showtimes.

Go to the box office of the theater the show is playing at the time specified on the Playbill website. For example, the showtimes and theater location for the Addams Family are given on the "Addams Family Playbill" website. Its website says that you should be at the theater two hours before the show begins. Also on that website are the times and performances the discounts are offered.
