How to Find a Song When Title & Singer Unknown

Digital music technology makes it easier than ever for people to download their favorite songs with the click of a button. In some cases, though, you may hear a song that you really like but not know the title or artist's name. In such instances, you can use reason and technology to help you locate the song, even if you have little or no information at your disposal.

Guess the title. In some cases, you can accurately guess the title just by listening to the lyrics. Though it is not always the case, artists sometimes repeat the title over and over again throughout the course of the song. Examples include songs like "Help" by The Beatles, "Stop! In the Name of Love" by The Supremes and more recent hits like "Oops I Did it Again" by Britney Spears. Try guessing the title and entering the words into your favorite search engine. You may find all of the information that you need or even links to purchase the actual song or album.

Scan the songs using song finder applications. If you own a smartphone, you can download an application like Midomi, Music ID or Shazam, and use it to find songs. These apps do have one shortcoming, though -- they can only find music if you use them while the song is actually playing, such as on a radio station or television commercial. The app listens to the song and locates the artist and title from a large database of music.

Visit lyric search engines. Even if you cannot figure out the title through guesswork, you may still find the song if you know some of the lyrics by heart (or if you write down some of the lyrics while listening to the song). Just visit a lyrics search engine online, such as Lyrics Robot, Lyrics Fly or Lyrics Drive, and enter the lyrics that you know, to the best of your ability. Click the "Search" button and view the search results that appear. You may find a complete list of the lyrics along with the artist name, song title and album title. If you know any exact lines, word for word, use quotation marks to get more precise results.

Call your local radio station. If you hear the song on the radio, but the DJ fails to mention the title or the artist, you may still have some luck. Some radio stations feature a "Recently Played" or "Recently Heard" list on their websites. If you do not see such a list, you can look for a phone number and call the station itself. Just politely ask as to the artist name and title. Even if you do not get on the air with the DJ, anyone working for the station should have some familiarity with the music rotation.
