How to Mix on Pro Tools

Mixing is the process of bringing all of the song elements from a recording together into a cohesive final song. Mixing is a complex process that has been revolutionized by Pro Tools. This program enables the artist or engineer to mix complete songs without the need for outboard sound gear. It is completely possible to mix professional sounding songs with only a computer and Pro Tools software and hardware. Pro Tools even has its own effects like reverb, EQ and compression built-in. With Pro Tools, you have everything you need to create the perfect mix. Follow these steps.

Instructions

    • 1

Make sure that all of the necessary song elements have been recorded. Before you can start a mix you want to be sure that all of the essential parts have already been tracked.

    • 2

Add compression to tracks that have a wide dynamic range. It is difficult to mix a song in Pro Tools if proper compression has not been added to each music track. Compression will ensure that each track sits in a stable position within the mix. Go into your "Plug-ins" folder and choose "Dynamics" from the list in order to place a compressor in each track.

    • 3

Add EQ. Choose an EQ effect from the "Plug-in" list in order to properly EQ each track so that it has a unique "space" in the mix. Pro Tools comes free with its own highly effective EQ plug-in. EQ allows you to tailor specific frequencies in a track in order to make sure that the overall mix does not have too much or too little of a certain frequency range.

    • 4

Add time effects. One of the final steps when mixing in Pro Tools will be to add time effects like delay and reverb. These effects will add space to certain tracks in your mix, making the mix sound wider and fuller. You can also add other unusual effects to give the song elements in your mix their own unique character.

    • 5

Adjust individual volumes. Once the right amount of compression, EQ, and effects have been added to each track, adjust each track's volume in order to make it fit into the overall shape of the song. You may have to adjust EQ and other effects multiple times throughout this process, as making changes to one track has an effect on every other track. Once all of the elements fit to your liking, the song is finished and your mix is done.
