Start the Cool Edit program on your PC or Mac. The executable file can generally be found in the Start menu, on the Desktop or within the program's installed directory.
Choose to create a new project or load an existing audio file. Cool Edit defaults to single-track view, which allows the user to manipulate the properties of a single audio file.
Record audio if you are creating an original piece. Audio can be recorded directly into the computer's audio-in jack or by microphone. Begin recording by clicking the red circle on the bottom-left corner of the screen.
Stop the recording and manipulate the audio until the desired sound is achieved. Audio effects can be accessed by clicking the "Effects" tab at the top of the window.
Switch to multitrack view by clicking the rectangular button with the three green waveforms in the top left-hand corner of the screen.
Place the already recorded audio by right-clicking within a window, clicking "Insert" and selecting the appropriate file.
Record additional tracks in the multitrack view by clicking the red "Record" button. Already recorded tracks will play unless silenced, so if recording with a microphone, wear headphones.
Export the completed audio by selecting the "File" tab at the top of the screen and clicking "Export Audio." Choose a file type and allow the audio to export.
Save the entire project by clicking the "File" tab and selecting "Save Project." Projects that are saved can be revisited and reedited on a track-by-track basis.
